Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 40 kms from the Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) district in Kerala. It was established in 1958. This sanctuary covers a total area of 128 square km. and the core area is only 60 kms. The sanctuary stretches from Neyyatinkara Taluk to the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.

It is the drainage basin of the Neyyar river and its tributaries, Mullayar and Kallar which originated in Agasthyarkoodam, the second highest peak in Kerala (1868 m). The tourists can enjoy the jungle safari, boat rides on the reservoir and trekking. The vegetation in the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary comprises of the rugged terrain with rushing brooks and flat meadows.

The diversity of the flora at Neyyar makes the sanctuary an ideal gene pool preserve. There are nearly 109 rare plants in the region. Medicinal plants abound in the Agastiar hills. The forest type consists of the tropical evergreen forest in the west coast and southern hilltop, moist mixed deciduous forest in the southern region, sub tropical savannah and the reed breeks in the southern region.

The major wildlife animals which can be seen in the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary are elephant, gaur, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, Indian porcupine, three-striped squirrel, tiger, Malabar squirrel, lion-tailed macaque, mouse deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur etc. Various reptiles which can also be seen in this sanctuary are Cobra, viper, python, rat snake, flying snake, lizard etc. Various birds are also found in this sanctuary like Common myna, kingfisher, white-breasted water hen, little green heron, woodpecker, house crow, koel, Indian cuckoo, grey jungle fowl, hoopoe, jungle myna, darter, little cormorant, little egret, brahminy kite etc. The other major tourist attraction in this sanctuary is the crocodile farm.

Best time to visit : An ideal months to visit the sanctuary is from October to March.

Other Attractions : Apart from exploring the wildlife sanctuary also visit the Crocodile Rearing centre and Agasthyakoodam Peak. Have an enthralling joy of trekking the peak measuring 1890 m in height.

How to reach:

Air : The nearest airport is located at Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum which is about 32 kms.

Rail : The nearest railway station is located at Thiruvananthapuram.

Road : The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary can be easily reached from Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram).

DAY 01 : Arrival Cochin - Athirapally

DAY 02 : Athirapally

DAY 03: Athirapally - Calicut

Day 03 - Drive to Calicut, the traditional capital of North Kerala a leading trading centre for spices on the west coast. Enroute visit 'Kalamandalam' dance and arts centre where you can also spend a day with the masters and witness artists and teachers in action. Proceed to Calicut and check into your resort. Rest of the day at leisure. In the evening go for a relaxing cruise in your private houseboat through the stunning backwaters of Calicut. Overnight stay in hotel. (Vehicle at disposal)

DAY 04: Calicut

Day 04 - Visit the fish markets or venture into town and see the Sweet Meat Street and the many colourful shops. Visit the boat yards in Beypore which have been building vessels since early centuries for legendary seamen. DAY 05 : Calicut - Vythiri

Day 05 - Drive to Wayanad set in the picturesque Western Ghats and mountains. Littered with tropical rain forests, dense hills, rolling paddy fields, spice plantations and valleys, Wayanad is a hitherto undiscovered location offering breathtaking views. Check into your resort. DAY 06 : Vythiri

Day 06 - Wake up in the rainforest amidst the sound of chirping birds and tingling streams around your cottage. Visit the pre historic Edakkal Caves today. Overnight at the Resort. (Vehicle at disposal)

DAY 07: Vythiri - Sulthan Bathery

Day 07 - Early morning drive to Sulthan Bathery and check into a plantation hideaway. Later visit the Thirunelli Temple set in a serene location amidst the Brahmagiri hills. With its lush vegetation and gurgling clear streams, the place presents a breathtaking spectacle. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 08: Sulthan Bathery

Day 08 - Today visit the Wayanad sanctuary where one can find animals like sloth bears, sambhar (wild deer), elephants, monkeys, tigers, reptiles,deer, panthers, and many species of rare birds. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 09 : Sulthan Bathery - Kannur

Day 09 - 75kms/3hrs)Drive to Kannur, a land with a resonant past where myths and legends abound. The ships of Solomon are believed to have anchored here at one time. Check into your resort. In the evening visit the colourful Theyyam dance in a nearby temple. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 10 : Kannur

Day 10 - Today go on a day excursion of Kannur and visit the famous Parassinikkadavu temple and the Kannur fort. You could also drive to the Muzhipilangad beach, Kerala's only drivein beach. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 11: Kannur - Calicut

Day 11 - (93kms/2.5hrs)Drive to Calicut for a second days halt in the historical city. On arrival, check into you hotel where you can unwind. Day at leisure. Enjoy a full body Ayurveda massage. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 12: Calicut - Cochin

Day 12 - (180kms/4hrs)Early morning drive to Cochin and enroute visit to Guruvayoor, the temple town near Thrissur. Visit the elephant sanctuary at Punnathoorkotta.The palace ground of the erstwhile kings of Punnathoor houses an elephant camp with more than 60 elephants and is said to be the only one of its kind anywhere in the world. Drive on to Cochin and check into your hotel. Enjoy a sunset cruise in the evening. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 13: Cochin

Day 13 - Today you could go for an optional sightseeing tour to explore the many fascinating highlights of Cochin which include - The Jew Town, St. Francis Church, the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Dutch Palace, the Spice market and the 15th century Chinese fishing nets. Later in the afternoon, you could go shopping in the bustling metropolis. Overnight stay in resort / hotel.

DAY 14: Cochin - Departure

Day 14 - Departure transfer to Cochin airport for return flight. (Vehicle for transfer)
